Is "Pal" really the right word to use here? For some reason it seems very irreverent given the circumstance. I don't think I've ever used the word "pal." I don't know why, but it just sounds really stupid. This was acknowledged in the Seinfeld episode, "The Deal" when Elaine got upset when Jerry referred to her as his pal. "What's wrong with 'pal'? Why is everyone so down on 'pal'?"
