Knock-knock Jokes

I would very much like to know the origin of the Knock-Knock joke. If I had never heard one before, and upon hearing one you then told me that it would eventually be known all across America by all ages, I would think you were out of your mind. First, they are not funny at all. I have never heard a funny knock-knock joke. Second, I can’t think of any other joke methods as unique as this one. There are the classic “Man walks into a bar…”, “A priest and a rabbi…”, etc., but those are just similarly classified variations of a storytelling joke. The format is basically just a story with a punch line. Same with the “What do you call a…” genre.

The only theory I have is that it was first published in some form of mass media. No way would such a dumb joke format rise to fame on its own merits. It was probably featured on the Howdy Doody show, or some other kids show from that era, and passed along as humor. Orange you glad you didn’t live back then?
